Minute Masterclass Episode 71

Welcome to your one-minute masterclass. I’m Andrea Trench, founder of DiscoverDance. Today we continue our series on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Once our basic and safety needs are largely met, we can climb to the third level of the hierarchy which are our Love and Belonging Needs. There are several ways we can meet these needs in our dance classes.

First, we want to create an environment where every student feels cared for. We do this by making eye contact with each of them, saying their name often, and involving them in class choices. In addition, we must treat all children equally no matter how many needs they have that aren’t being met. Remember, when needs are not met, undesired behaviors appear. We all know how frustrating it can be to have that one kid in class who never “behaves”. But what is that child trying to tell you? There is always a reason behind every behavior.

Next, we want to promote social interaction among our students. Group activities with the parachute or the giant stretchy band are excellent opportunities to build respect for one other. Lastly, let’s take this opportunity when they are young to teach proper audience etiquette. This will, no doubt, make your students feel loved and like they belong.
