Minute Masterclass Episode 167

Welcome to your one-minute masterclass. I’m Andrea Trench, founder of DiscoverDance and creator of the Foundations Course for Early Childhood Dance Educators and the DiscoverDance Experience Membership. To close out this series on choreography for little ones, let’s talk about realistic expectations. Setting our dancers up for success should be our top priority. We want to challenge our dancers, yes, but we must consider their development. We must also provide the proper tools needed to achieve the goals we set for them. Your choreography should reflect your class objectives and highlight your students’ progress. With developmentally appropriate objectives, the choreographic process will be easy. If it’s not easy, consider that oftentimes we place unrealistic expectations on our students. It is up to us, their teachers, to identify the challenges and provide the support they need. And, in true early childhood fashion, you may have all the systems and strategies in place and they still just stand and stare during their performance. Sigh… At least the journey to that moment wasn’t stressful.
