Minute Masterclass Episode 11

Welcome to your one-minute masterclass. I’m Andrea Trench, founder of DiscoverDance. Spatial Awareness is the ability to know where we are in space and in relation to other people or things in that space. This awareness helps develop our creative problem solving skills which leads to successfully navigating obstacles in our path or formation changes in our dance routines.

According to the Occupational Therapy for children blog, “Children with poor spatial awareness tend to have visual perceptual difficulties as well. They may appear clumsy and may bump into others. They often stand too close or too far away from the people or objects that they are interacting with…These children often find it hard to tell their left from right and they confuse positional language i.e. over, under, in or out, left or right. This makes it hard for them to follow directions that use such language.”

Let’s encourage the development of spatial awareness by moving over/under, around/through, on/off, in/out, beside/between, near and far during obstacle courses in our early childhood dance classes. For more information, visit DiscoverDance.com.
