Minute Masterclass Episode 18

Welcome to your one-minute masterclass. I’m Andrea Trench, founder of DiscoverDance. Challenges with learning performance choreography include short attention spans, lack of interest, complicated movement and formations, and difficulties remembering material. Consider the following when approaching choreography in your early childhood classes:

1. Teach choreography right after warm-up. You wanna catch their brains and bodies while they are fresh!

2. Choose your music wisely. Songs with lyrics work best for little ones. If your students can connect a song lyric with a movement, their ability to remember choreography will improve.

3. Only use formations that are practiced regularly in class, such as moving from two lines into a circle.

Instead of teaching the choreography, use the “Follow Me” teaching strategy. Little ones will learn from mirroring your movement. If you spend too much time explaining every step by step detail, they will become bored and resort to off-task behavior. For more information, visit DiscoverDance.com.
