Minute Masterclass Episode 58

Welcome to your one-minute masterclass. I’m Andrea Trench, founder of DiscoverDance. Today we are discussing the brain-based principle: Present a Meaningful Curriculum. When we think of early childhood dance programs we may be drawn to the fun, playful, and cute aspect of these classes. However, when we look at the research on the rapid development of the brain during the early years, we must take full advantage of the opportunity presented to us. We can do this by switching, what Anne Green Gilbert describes as, our steps-only approach to a conceptual approach.

Teaching conceptually activitates multiple areas of the brain which are responsible for developing skills, critical thinking, problem solving, creating new ideas, and memory retention. Here at DiscoverDance, we explore 11 dance concepts throughout our dance season. This happens over 4 stages of development from walkers to age 5. Each class offers opportunities for sensory input, exploration, creation, developing skills, and reflection. We are creating a space where deep learning can take place during the most crucial time of brain development and you can too! For more information, visit DiscoverDance.com.
