Minute Masterclass Episode 66

Welcome to your one-minute masterclass. I’m Andrea Trench, founder of DiscoverDance. Today we are discussing the brain-based principle: Offer a Curriculum that is Holistic and Sequential. Anne Green Gilbert writes in her Brain-Compatible Dance Education book, “Students learn better through studying whole ideas in context than through studying isolated parts….Students also learn best when the curriculum is sequential rather than random.”

Here at DiscoverDance, each of our lesson plans focus on one concept at a time. We repeat each concept for 3 weeks before moving to the next until we have completed all 11 concept lesson plans, plus a review lesson plan. This fills our typical September-May dance season. When they move to the next developmental level in their dance training, they repeat the 11 concepts in the same order building knowledge and skills upon one another through each passing class. By the time they complete the DiscoverDance program, they have a solid foundation in the understanding of the essence of movement and mechanics of dance and are ready to advance their developmentally appropriate technical skills.
