Minute Masterclass Episode 168

Welcome to your one-minute masterclass. I’m Andrea Trench, founder of DiscoverDance and creator of the Foundations Course for Early Childhood Dance Educators and the DiscoverDance Experience Membership. Today we’re beginning a new series on one of my favorite classroom management tools: the obstacle course. Young children are not built to stay still for long periods of time. Therefore, waiting while an entire class goes across the floor one at a time, is not developmentally appropriate at this age. If you are observing off-track behavior during across-the-floor time, perhaps that’s your sign to put this classroom management strategy in place to avoid that behavior.

In addition to the obstacle course keeping our class moving, we are also able to incorporate more skill development into our classes. This allows us to maximize the short amount of time we have together with learning and growing. Not all obstacle courses are built the same. Join me for the next several weeks as I break down the DiscoverDance 5-station obstacle course, dive into the foundational, conceptual, and codified skill development possibilities, and share tips and tricks to make obstacle course time a success!
